Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers (approximately one sleeve)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: crushed nuts, crushed candy canes, or a sprinkle of sea salt


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup, and arrange a single layer of saltine crackers on it.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a steady boil.
  4. Carefully pour the bubbling butter mixture over the saltine crackers, ensuring each cracker is evenly coated.
  5. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 5-7 minutes, allowing it to bubble up.
  6. Once removed from the oven, sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a few minutes until they soften.
  7. Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer.
  8. If desired, add your favorite toppings while the chocolate is still warm, gently pressing them in.
  9. Allow the whole creation to cool completely before breaking it into pieces.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. Freeze for longer storage, layering between parchment paper.
