Description

A stunning red velvet cake with a rich flavor, perfect for celebrations and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, blend the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually blend the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, mixing just until combined.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the baking soda and vinegar, then fold this into your batter.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For a healthier version, substitute some vegetable oil with unsweetened applesauce. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze without frosting for up to 3 months.
