Ingredients
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: breadcrumb topping for extra crunch
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the macaroni. Cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Melt the butter in the same pot over medium heat. Stir in the flour and whisk for about a minute to form a roux.
- Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously. Stir until the mixture thickens and bubbles gently.
- Remove the pot from heat and mix in the cheddar and mozzarella cheese until completely melted. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well coated.
- For a crunchy top, transfer to a baking dish, sprinkle breadcrumbs on top, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
