Description
A savory twist on classic French toast infused with za’atar and ooey-gooey cheese, perfect for brunch or a quick dinner.
Ingredients
- 8 slices thick-cut bread (slightly stale preferred)
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons za’atar
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Butter or olive oil for frying
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat a skillet: Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add a tablespoon of butter or olive oil to coat the pan.
- Mix the batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, za’atar, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
- Prepare the sandwiches: Pour the egg mixture into a shallow dish suitable for dipping. Place shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese between two slices of bread to make a sandwich.
- Dip in egg mixture: Carefully dip both sides of each sandwich into the egg mixture, allowing them to soak for a moment to absorb the flavors.
- Cook the sandwiches: Place the sandwiches onto the skillet. Cook for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve warm: Once cooked, remove the sandwiches, let them rest for one minute, slice, and enjoy while warm!
Notes
Consider serving with a drizzle of honey or labneh. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days or frozen for up to a month.
