Description
A delightful twist on traditional French toast with a custardy richness and a caramelized top, perfect for brunch or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf Challah bread
- 6 large egg yolks
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1 vanilla bean
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 cup fresh berries
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Whipped cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Whisk together the egg yolks, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla bean seeds.
- Cut the Challah bread into thick slices and arrange them in a greased baking dish.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring each slice is well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Remove from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
- Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat and add the soaked bread slices. Cook until golden brown on both sides.
- Transfer to the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes until the custard is set.
- Dust with powdered sugar and use a kitchen torch to caramelize the top until golden and crispy.
- Serve warm with fresh berries and whipped cream.
Notes
Allow the custard mixture to sit for an hour before pouring over the bread for extra flavor. For a quick caramelized top, you can broil it in the oven instead of using a kitchen torch.
